Washer Troubleshooting

Washer troubleshooting guides, currently covering Whirlpool washers that won't spin — from lid-lock and load-balance codes to the direct-drive motor coupling that's designed to fail before the motor does.

Common Washer Problems

Right now this hub covers one problem on one platform: a Whirlpool washer that fills and agitates but won't spin. Rule out the boring cause first. A washer won't spin a tub it hasn't drained, so water left standing at the end of the cycle is a drain problem, not a motor problem. If the tub is empty and the motor hums while the drum sits still, look at the motor coupling. On Whirlpool's direct-drive top-loaders it's a small part designed to break before the motor does.

Choose by Symptom

Is a code on the display? LdL, LdU and Ofb each point at one specific cause, so start there. With no code, first confirm it actually drained, then check the lid switch, then the belt, then the coupling.

Safety First

Unplug the washer before pulling any panel. Never tape down or bypass the lid switch to test a spin. The drum reaches 800 to 1200 RPM, and that interlock is what stops it from spinning with the lid open.
